History in the Sundsvall area from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Around 500 AD lived, on what you know, the richest ruler in the area. He lived in Högom located right in the heart of the west of Sundsvall. In Högom are currently ten visible mounds, but you know that there have been at least 17 mounds.

The others have disappeared due to agriculture and more. Three of the major and two of the little has been excavated. Högom The man was in the high number two and the pile is more than a high number one who has not yet been excavated and that has been dated to the mid-500s.

In Högom man's grave was found a number of objects that show that he was an important and wealthy person. His burial suit was all red and shades of red color indicates that the fabric had come from Italy. How one of those beautiful fabrics come you do not know, but the most likely route is through Norway, where also other of his objects probably came from. They are produced in southern Europe. Even some items that he has been with him in the tomb is made in Norway. Högom man, as he is called, was perhaps the chief of my entire northern and perhaps even parts of Norway. It is only now, more recently they have concluded that he could have ruled over such a large area.
